River Project Highlight! A Goldfish!?

(Goldfish caught by team member Tyler)

This goldfish was caught in the Flint River near the Hamilton Dam much to the surprise of the crew. Goldfish as we know are popular pets in the pet trade and are widely distributed across the U.S. Sadly some people either can no longer keep their fish for a variety of reasons but don't wish to kill them, so they believe releasing them into the wild is the more humane option. While it may be a humane option this still can cause issues to the local ecosystem. A goldfish can grow larger in a wider habitat, reaching up to 14 inches and can take away resources from our more native fish and damage their habitats. So please consider carefully if you can properly care for a pet and do not release it into the wild!
